Holocaust Remembrance at VOS

Holocaust Remembrance at VOS

We are committed to keeping the history of the Holocaust in our community’s consciousness to honor those who perished and survived, and so that current and future generations are aware of what occurred and what can recur.

Music & Memory

In 2018, our Chaplain’s son Asher Mehr partnered with The Remember Us Project (http://www.remember-us.org) when he became Bar Mitzvah. Asher was paired with a teen who did not survive during the Shoah (Holocaust). Asher was so inspired by this experience that he went on to found Music & Memory, an annual Holocaust commemorative event at VOS. He feels that music can reach where words cannot and art can offer healing. This event provides an opportunity for community, light, comfort and hope.

The Butterfly Project

In 2017 under the leadership of congregant, Julie Goren, VOS embarked on an important and beautiful Holocaust remembrance program called The Butterfly Project.

The Butterfly Project is a call to action through education, the arts and memorial making. It uses the lessons of the Holocaust to educate about the dangers of hatred and bigotry and cultivates empathy and social responsibility. Participants paint ceramic butterflies that are permanently displayed as symbols of resilience and hope, with the goal of creating 1.5 million butterflies around the world—one for each child who perished in the Holocaust and honoring the survivors.
